From the vast playgrounds to 12-inch smartphone screens, childhood has shrunk to unimaginable extend in the current digital scenario. Now it is a blend of screens, social media, and constant connectivity. Today’s children grow up with smartphones, tablets, and YouTube as everyday companions. This raises three main issues to childhood— privacy concerns, debates on consents and digital well-being.

Personal moments often find their way into the public sphere, especially through the rising trend of family vlogs. While these vlogs offer glimpses into everyday family life, they also raise serious concerns about privacy—particularly for the children featured in them. The display of children’s personal life moments becomes a content for public consumption which is later utilized for monetary benefits. When vlogs are monetized, the child’s presence directly contributes to the family’s income, raising ethical concerns about exploitation. This leads to the second issue of digital childhoods —consent. Ask a parent if they have taken consent of their child on if he/she wants to get filmed? The answer will be No. The right to consent is largely seen as an adult right, but it is high time we should reframe it in terms of children. India’s Information Technology (IT) Rules, 2021 touch on protecting children’s privacy online, but there’s no comprehensive law ensuring a child’s right to digital consent. The responsibility typically lies with parents or guardians, who themselves are misusing the rights to a large extent. On the other hand, regarding children’s digital content consumption, the amount of screen viewing of children has increased to alarming levels in most urban and semi-urban parts of the country.

The shift in education to digital spaces after the COVID 19 pandemic, gaming apps, and OTT streaming services have become integral parts of their daily routines. While integrating digital tools into education offer valuable learning opportunities, the excessive amount of screen time is raising serious concerns. Prolonged exposure to screens can affect children’s physical and mental health, causing issues such as eye strain, disrupted sleep patterns, negative impacts on their attention spans, social skills, and emotional well-being. Unmonitored access to digital platforms can also exposes them to age-inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and online predators.

The meaning of childhood is undergoing a profound transformation in the digital age which is most cases is proven not for the better. From a child’s privacy invasion and the absence of meaningful consent to alarming levels of screen dependency, children today face unique challenges that previous generations never encountered. It is time to rethink our approach to digital parenting, ensuring that children’s rights to privacy, consent, and well-being are prioritized. Protecting childhood means creating safe, respectful, and balanced digital environments where children can truly thrive.

Have you ever wondered how fulfilling your childhood was without the overwhelming impact of technologies?
