“Click Smart, Stay Safe”: Building Digital Citizenship Among Schoolchildren

As part of the ICSSR-funded project on Children, and Digital Safety, a series of cybersecurity and digital citizenship workshops were conducted across five schools in Delhi. The initiative aimed to empower students in class 5th-9th with critical knowledge on online safety, cyber ethics, digital rights, and responsible technology use.

The workshops successfully reached students from diverse educational backgrounds, ensuring that essential digital-safety education is made accessible to all.

Educator Reflection: South Delhi Workshop

One of the workshop facilitators shared

“The students were bright and aware, but lacked clarity on how to apply good digital habits in real online scenarios. They knew the terms data privacy, cybersecurity, right to expression but not the practical steps. After interacting with teachers, we realized that cyberbullying and even cyber thefts were common concerns. We guided students on when and how to report incidents, and reinforcements from parents and teachers were strongly recommended.”

Educator Feedback: Deepanshu

“The students were incredibly enthusiastic, and even small rewards like a toffee made participation joyful. Two moments stood out: their astonishment at learning about the permanence of digital footprints, and their surprise that cyberbullying is actually a crime. These ‘aha’ moments show that the workshop is addressing very real knowledge gaps.”

The “Cyber-Superhero Framework”, a model explaining simple steps for safe online behaviour was very well received. A major takeaway for the students was understanding that their Digital Footprint is permanent, and that every post, comment, or search leaves a trace that can influence their future opportunities. Students also expressed surprise upon learning that cyberbullying is a punishable crime and that deleted chats or browsing history do not erase one’s digital record. The sessions demonstrated how eager young learners are to understand and adopt safe online habits.
